Habitat restoration is the process of assisting recovery, and management, of ecological integrity. Ecological integrity includes a critical range of variability in biodiversity, ecological processes and structures, regional and historical context, and sustainable cultural practices. (The Society for Ecological Restoration, 1996).
At Point Reyes National Seashore, teams of volunteers help restore and protect habitat by removing invasive non-native plants, using simple tools to do physical work. Led by a National Park Service ranger, volunteers work in various outdoor settings throughout the park, and also learn about plants and current resource management issues. Regular drop-in workdays happen several weekends each month. Special workdays for large groups can be scheduled. For more information, call the Habitat Restoration Program Hotline 415-464-5211.
