The Goodwin & Blair Studio / Gallery

371 Drakes View

Inverness, CA 94937

The new studio is 48x28 feet. It contains a large open room (32x28 feet) for working on our artwork, with lots of wall space and good lighting to show our images and a second room (16x20 feet) where the archival printer will sit, surrounded by our image collection on film and computer, so we can create our books and artwork. A bathroom and utility room complete the structure. It is wired for networking and the internet so it can broadcast good vibes!

The peace, space, fresh air, and views of the Inverness Ridge and Pacific Ocean make this a incredible place to work, plus the space is designed for classes and events, such as open studios, acoustic concerts by our talented local musicians, lectures by naturalists, slide shows and gallery openings, which are not to be missed!

The building was designed by Elliot Abrams, the architect of the Fourth Street shopping district in Berkeley.

We were the general contractors. (We're compulsive do-it-yourselfers). The main crew who built the structure was Elvin Hernandez and Teo Quezadas. They were on sabbatical from working with an esteemed local builder, Axel Nelson. They were helped by Javier Rodriguez who was the apprentice. Elvin is getting his contractor's license - we could not recommend him more highly. He is an amazing craftsman and an exceptional person. Teo and Javier were a joy to have around, and their good humor and skill were wonderful to behold.

Richard hand-nailed the exterior with cedar shingles recoved from old growth stumps. It was a labor intensive 2 month project. He was helped by Kathleen, who selected the right sized shingles and passed them up the ladder. She has been a huge help in the process of building, both physically and adding her formidable brainpower in solving problems encountered along the way, not the least of which was a ill-timed IRS audit! Marcus Hanschen, who just finished his MA degree in photography at Cal and who will be assisting Richard with photography workshops also provided help.
